Augrabies Falls National Park

Augrabies.jpg smallJonathan has just returned from the last Northern Cape Diamonds and Dunes NCa13 tour that Sunway has run for the last 3 years and had this to share with us...

It is hard to define a particular moment or pinpoint a highlight on this tour as there are so many. This is the Northern Cape Diamond route.

Starting in Johannesburg and making our way down to Cape Town travelling through the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa. Everywhere we went was a visual feast as the landscapes are just beautiful and this excludes the wild flowers blooming in Namaqualand at this time of year.

For myself and those in the tour group who rose early in the morning to do a short hike in Augrabies National Park, I think this could be the highlight. The previous day we arrived at Augrabies falls which are not far from the town of Upington along the Great Orange River, the longest in South Africa which satrs in Lesotho and ends in the Atlantic Ocean . The falls themselves are amazing with many view points that enable one to see the water cascading into the Orange River George and the rocks that have been characterised by the motion of the water. Blue sky, red rocks and cascading waters- stunning. But the real beauty is in the area surrounding the falls. We did the Dassie hiking trail, only 5 .5 km long and easy on the foot. The trail gave you the most amazing photographic opportunities in the early morning light. The plant life and little dassies catching the early morning sunrays. We ascended Moon Rock, a huge granite dome and at the top we had an elevated view of the area.
