Baboons leading the way at Cape Point

Starting in Johannesburg, going through the beautiful National Parks and landscapes of South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho, finishing in the “mother city” of Cape Town.

On one of the two days that you get to spend in Cape Town on this tour, we do a Peninsula tour, which includes a visit of Hout Bay from where you can do a boat trip to seal island, a stunning scenic walk to Cape Point and Cape of Good and a visit at the penguins of Boulders/Simon’s Town.
It is not unusual to see lots of Baboons on the walk up to Cape Point and down to the Cape of Good Hope. Unfortunately, these baboons sometimes get fed by visitors, which can, as with most wild animals, lead to the death of the animal due to their unnatural, even aggressive behaviour as a consequence to the feeding.

What we experienced on our last tour was not aggressive at all though, but much more interesting to watch. Walking back down from Cape Point’s view point, we suddenly noticed a galloping noise coming from behind. It was a baboon taking over! Usually you will have to watch your bags and sometimes even your cameras carefully since baboons are very curious and always on search for food. But this baboon was not even looking at us, it only passed us on the path, just as a vehicle would overtake another on the road. It was not the only baboon doing that but the whole group passed us one by one, all the way down to the parking lot, just minding their own businesses. Getting to the parking, we immediately found out where they were rushing to – it was lunch time and people in the parking area were busy getting out their lunch packs! These very clever animals do for sure have a sense for time!
