Valentina is a new addition to the Sunway team and had a very exciting moment on her first tour, the 16 Day Zimbabwe & Botswana Game Trail camping safari...a fantastic 2 weeks of camping travel in Zimbabwe, in combination with the Kruger National Park and Botswana.
Valentina writes: On our Zimbabwe & Botswana Game Trail camping safari recently, we went through Kruger Park hoping to see endangered Rhino but it was not to be... one of our clients, Paula from New Zealand, expressed her sadness at this as she had come all the way to Africa in the hopes of seeing her favorite animal. Maxwell, my colleague and fellow Sunway guide, explained that we still had hope in Matopos.
On the full day here we head into the Matobos National Park with a local guide to visit the core of the Matopos Hills, an area of granite koppies and wooded valleys. On our open vehicle game drive we visited World's View and the historical site of Cecil John Rhodes' grave. Then as part of our visit we took a guided walk to track and hopefully find the endangered white rhino. The day was rather cloudy and John Burton the expert guide said that it actually improved our chances of seeing Rhino.
We had not been in the park for even twenty minutes, when John spotted rhino spoor heading off into the nearby hills. We all alighted from our open vehicle and after a brief on safety we all set off in single file behind John, taking care to be as quiet as possible. Ten minutes later, John suddenly put up a fist telling us to stop. We were all craning our necks to see what it was, then John said "See those rocks?", "Those are actually the backs of rhinos!" and almost on cue one of the rhinos stood up followed by the other two.
John took us down wind of them, eventually taking us about twenty meters from these prehistoric creatures. Absolute magic...Needless to say, Paula was over the moon!
