Coming to Africa is a dream for lots of people, but for many people that dream does come true. The question Carina has for you is : What do you want to see on your African dream safari?
There are a lot of answers to that question and 1 country that comes to mind is Botswana! I can give you a whole list of things that I want to see more than once as I have been there many times but these things never stop to amaze me.
Khama Rhino Sanctuary, The Okavango delta, Makgadikgadi Pans and the Chobe National Park.
Starting our tour we visited Khama rhino Sanctuary and we saw 4 rhino right next to us at a waterhole cooling of and quenching their thirst. Then we saw the unforgettable part of everyday life struggle in Africa. We saw the rangers darting and dehorning a white rhino to protect it from the daily dangers from poachers that want to kill the rhino just for their horns, which is made of the same stuff as your fingernails 'keratin'.
The next day we set of to Maun to do another thing 'the Okavango delta'. We started with a beautiful helicopter flight over the delta to see how the delta looks from above before starting on our mokoro 'dug out Canoe' cruise down low in between the plant live and inches away from the water. Going through the channels you can't help it to wander where the elephants and hippos is. Then suddenly you hear the blowing sound and then the grunting noise of a hippo and you know you are not alone in the mighty delta.
Then arriving at your delta home on an island far away from any humans, except your fellows at camp and the helpful and experienced polers. You settle in and of you go to explore the delta islands on foot and the animals in it. From the plentiful impalas to the gentle giants. Then sleeping time brings its own adventures as you are laying in your tent, you hear all the animal sounds from hippos moving around to a hyena laughing in the background. What more can you ask for!
The Makgadikgadi salt pans the massive open areas with a calm sea view of water and the magic little sand patches in the water with the beautiful coloured pelicans on them and the hypnotising colours of an Africa sunset behind them, it makes you forget that you are on the edge of the Kalahari dessert.
Chobe what can I say except absolutely breath taking. Doing an afternoon boat cruise on the Chobe river and you will forget about time. So many beautiful scenes from elephants swimming through the river to the famous sidudu island to the African skimmers raising there chicks on the island fearing their babies lives from the giant feet moving over the islands.
Now on our way back watching yet again another African sunset I can't stop myself thinking that here I am living the African dream.
