On a recent SAa17 Rainbow Route tour, Patrick and Cloud's group had a very memorable experience with whales in Hermanus...
The Southern Right Whale is one of our visitors, that moves along the South African east coast se between June and November. Obviously the Southern Right Whale isn’t good in keeping time(how could they, they don’t wear watches), so they can come anytime from June or even only start arriving in mid-July or so. My group was in luck...
When we reached Hermanus, which is one of the best land based whale watching spots in the world, we were able to see a little bit of movement far out in the bay.
While we were standing at the old harbour, keeping an eye out for those massive creatures, we saw how a couple of whale watching boats were sailing into the bay to get a closer look at the whales. That’s when my clients decided that they also wanted to go on whale watching cruise the following morning. The next morning we dropped the clients off at the new harbour, where the whale watching tours start from.
When we picked them up 3 hours later, the smiles on their faces were priceless, as their joy was written on them. They had seen several southern right whales on their boat cruise in the bay, but on one occasion they managed to get as close as a few metres to a mother and calf. It goes to show, when you put in the extra effort, you will be rewarded.
