Lloyd and Steff returned from our Mozambique & Kruger Beach & Bush MOa14 and had the following to share.
If you are interested in marine biology or marine creatures in general, then this is the perfect tour to experience the ocean and its wildlife. If you enjoy seafood, then this is definitely the tour for you.
Snorkelling in the small lagoon of Kosi Bay always amazes me. The small reef, that only reveals itself once you get closer to the channel in the lagoon, is so full of life; you can’t believe it is real. The current running above the reef is quite strong so one doesn’t even need fins. You can simply start at the top and let the water carry you, taking you along, above the reef, with your head under water! But if you see something cool then you will need to paddle, to try by all means, to get back to that sighting, but will most likely fail, as the current is that strong. I sadly don’t know enough about different fish species nor do I know many fish names but the colours are just spectacular. A personal favourite, the fire fish, seems to be a regular sighting though!
In Mozambique, amazing white beaches are waiting for us. In Inhambane I joined the group on an ocean safari where we tried to find the whale shark. Some wanted to see one so badly but it just wouldn’t happen. They had been sighted there 2 days before, but as all wildlife do – they move on!
Some clients even tried again the next day but they ‘only’ saw mantas.
The whale shark is the biggest species of fish but little is known about them. It is a filter-feeding fish and thus harmless to humans. The biggest one ever recorded was an incredible 12.65 meters in length. Mozambique, especially the Inhambane area, is a very good area for spotting them, but it all depends on luck, as with all of our sightings.
To end our time in Inhambane, Lloyd, my colleague and I bought seafood and fresh fish to make a nice dish for dinner, all fresh from the Indian Ocean. It is so satisfying to be able buy fresh ingredients and make a nice meal out of it. The best signs of clients excited for a dish, is when they start taking pictures of the finished pan before they start eating.
