Ocean Safaris In Mozambique

LM22 Annika small 1In November 2018 I (Annika) lead our Trade Route LM22 tour through Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. This tour is one of the true African experiences, especially whilst camping!
This tour will bring you close to everything you might be looking for in Southern Africa- villages and their people and traditions, wildlife and its fascinating diversity to breath taking beaches of the Indian Ocean that offer views, activities, relaxation and fresher than anywhere else – a finger licking cuisine, giving you everything this ocean has to offer.

A very special activity which can only be experienced on very few tours of this kind, is an Ocean Safari. Besides snorkelling with Dolphins, spotting huge swarms of Tuna and witnessing the stunning beauty of the generally colourful underwater world around the reefs around Praia de Tofo, you might be lucky to find the elusive gentle giants which spend most of the year in this area – Whale Sharks!

LM22 Annika small 2Whale Sharks are the largest fish in the world’s oceans and can grow up to ca 12m with a weight of up to over 20t. It is a filter feeding carpet shark and therefore only feeds on plankton and very small fish, which makes it harmless for the human being. Whale Sharks can be dived and snorkelled with whilst keeping a safe distance to protect the animal itself from diseases and to also protect us – this gentle giant doesn’t know how strong it is and you want to avoid to be accidentally hit by a fin.
Finding the Whale Sharks or not – as it is with any kind of creature – cannot be guaranteed. Even if you don’t get to see them, you will have an awesome two hours on the Indian Ocean, definitely seeing something you have never seen before and making an Ocean Safari a must around that area!

They were only about 50 metres from our small boat when we first spotted them and again proved to us – nature is unpredictable and an Ocean Safari is just like any other safari – you never know what you might end up seeing but there will always be something!
