Elephants in Victoria Falls

Carina 1 VF smallHaving been to Victoria Falls a few times I have seldom seen any large animals in the town its self. Carina and Farai had an experience on a recent trip that stayed in Vic falls and have the following to share.

A day in the life of people living in National Parks is often not seen, but today we saw it in Victoria Falls. After we did 12 days of our 14 day Botswana tour, we entered Zimbabwe and headed to Victoria Falls, the town is situated in a National Park and part of the briefing when visiting this town is to warn people to be careful of the animals in the town.

You normally see a few warthogs in town, Banded mongoose feeding on the lawn of the Hotel and the Baboons causing chaos all around town. You can see signs of elephants that have been in town with trees broken and balls of dung lying around, somtimes, if you are lucky, you will find elephantswalking around on the edge of town.
But today was different, Farai and myself were busy sorting out everything in town, and getting ready for the next tour, when the security guard came walking up to us with alarming speed. We got spooked by his approach when he said in a hasty way “ELEPHANT, there is an elephant” so we looked in the direction he pointed and there it was, an elephant about a meter away on the other side of the wall. We watched the elephant as it was feeding on the other side of the wall and he slowly started moving down the street, back towards the outskirts of town.

So after having a walk through the residential area of Victoria Falls and finding enough to eat, he went back to the bush, away from people.

Just another day in Vic Falls, when you think there is nothing new to see, there is always something to surprise you. Keep your eyes open when you are in Vic Falls you might be enlighten by a great sighting of an elephant in your backyard.
