Our guides Petros and Norman recently visited the Matobos National Park with their tour group to track and walk with white rhinos on the 16 day Zimbabwe Botswana Game Trail camping tour (ZB16). The guides shared their experience and special memories with us.  

The Matobos National Park in Zimbabwe lies on granite kopjes formed some 2000 million years ago, as molten rock spread across the landscape. The Matopos hills are surrounded by woody vegetation and home to the white rhino.

 

 

The protection of the rhino at Matobos National Park began 5 years ago in an effort to save the rapidly declining species. The Matopos rhino are de horned -a method used to deter poachers and anti poaching units patrol the area to protect this precious animal. On our Sunway Zimbabwe Botswana Game Trail tour our clients and guides shared a special experience tracking and walking with the white rhino of Matobos.

The scattering of large boulders across the landscape created shelters that were utilised from the early Stone Age right through to early historical times, as a result some of the most outstanding rock art collections of southern Africa have been created and date back to at least 13000 years. At the top of the Matopos Hill lies the grave of the British imperialist Cecil John Roads. The walk to the top of the hill includes a little climb and a beautiful scenic reward.
