We make our way into the more arid regions and upon entering Namibia, we camp at the Gariep River. Free time for swimming and relaxing or you can adventure down the river in canoes (own expense).

(Subject to animal movements we may use any of the 3 camps in Etosha.)

Transport: Due to Namibian gravel roads we mostly run this tour in custom-built Sunway Safari trucks with 12 seats; or (on 5% of tours) Mercedes Sprinter minibuses with 12 forward facing seats and air conditioning. For the transfer into the Okavango we use a 4WD Land Cruiser with 12 forward facing seats, with trailer. |
Limited Participation: An essential part of your safari is some participation. From putting up your tent to packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure. There are some long travel days which means early morning starts so we all need to get involved to make the day run efficiently. Your tour leaders will do all the meal preparation but we do ask the clients to help (on rotation) with the washing up. In the Okavango the local polers will offer to assist with washing up, and make your life a little easier!
We visit the southern eastern portion of the Okavango Delta. Our local mokoro guides are members of the OKMCT Community Trust. All entrance fees and guiding fees go directly to the local people. The entry fees are paid to the community trust office in Maun and are used by the trust board for their community upliftment. This portion of the income benefits the community as a whole.
The actual daily wages per guide is paid to each individual poler, and thus benefits that person and their family as direct income. By working with this community Sunway is ensuring them a tourism income and thus sustainable protection of the environment.
We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children). If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc)
The Namib desert landscapes form a magnificent backdrop for a spectacular safari. Lying on the Tropic of Capricorn, and flanked by the cold Atlantic Ocean, Namibia has a desert climate for the most part and there can be large differences in day and night temperatures, low rainfall and overall low humidity.
In combination with Namibia, this safari continues into neighbouring Botswana. This particularly flat country is land locked in central Southern Africa and shares a similar climate with Namibia, although slightly more rain and is technically semi-arid desert climate. In combination the follow applies:
June:– The nights are colder and can drop below 10°C/50°F. In desert areas, it can be freezing. Days are still pleasant around 20-24°C/68-75°F with clear blue skies.
July & August:– Winter morning game drives can be cold at an average minimum of 7°C/45°F, so dress in layers with a windproof jacket and beanie. The average daily temperature reaches 21-25°C/70-77°F but can fall to below freezing at night in the deserts and higher altitude areas.
September & October:– Spring is lovely. It isn't too hot, but the mornings are less chilly. The skies are clear and during October the green vegetation is fading as the heat builds up. October can be extremely hot.
Green season is from November to April: Photography is amazing at this time, with wonderful light, dramatic lightning, and thunders storm cloud formations. Wildlife revels in the bounty of summer and life is good.
November:– By now it is hot, but with the humidity still low, it is pleasant. On average, the days are above 30°C/86°F, but it can be a lot higher in the desert.
December:– The first rains arrive and the temperature drops. The landscape changes after the first rains and everything comes to life. For the lucky you might experience the rare phenomenon of rain in the Namib Desert.
January & February:– Tends to be hot and humid with temperatures around 30-35°C/86-95°F and over 40°C/104°F in the desert. There may be downpours in the afternoon but not every day. Mornings are usually clear.
March & April:– Rainfall stops around April. It cools down and the nights start to get cold. Average day temperatures are around 25-30°C/77-86°F.

Dear Sirs or Madams, I just returned from my last tour (Capetown to Vicfalls with Ishmael and Sipho) and I’d like to take the chance to thank you for this fantastic adventure. I’ve had a wonderful time with the guys and I absolutely enjoyed it. Extraordinary delicious food, some extremely beautiful campsites (especially Spitzkoppe, Sesriem and of course Okavango, just to name some of them – all the others was fine as well).
It is my second trip I did with your agency and I’d also like to compliment you for your guides. Last year with Collin and Moffat and now Ishmael and Sipho: All the guys are very, very caring about us and our wellbeing, very communicative, funny, knowing their country very well, animals, birds and plants, history, culture, telling funny stories. It was an absolut fabulous trip again and I just would want you to know that.
Dear Sunway Safaris. I would like to thank you for the most amazing tour from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. Your guides Shadreck and Innocent where truely professional and very good cooks. I have the following feedback from the tour.
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
There were SO many highlights. Possibly the most memorable part was our 2 night stay in the Okavango Delta. A short but amazing helicopter flight over the delta (optional, at extra cost) gave us the perfect overview before our mekoro (poled canoe) journey to the island, where the so-called basic facilities proved quite reasonable. No squatting, but a loo with a view and a shower with water heated over the fire! We had 2 pleasant walks with good wildlife viewing, a beautiful sunset mekoro trip, and the company of a hippo munching its way through the night on the grass by the adjacent pool. It was in the pool in the morning, before we left, but climbed out before we needed to travel past it.
Travelling by mekoro must be the most peaceful and relaxing way to travel!2. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. We ate in local restaurants, shopped locally and directly paid the people poling the mekoros.3. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Absolutely wonderful. The only changes I would make to the holiday would be for the company to provide drinking water (to obviate the need for lots of disposable plastic bottles) and for there to be airplane style overhead lockable storage in the vehicle so clients would not needs to carry their backpacks around when otherwise they were not needed. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Hi Dirk, I hope you are well. I am glad that I have received the opportunity to properly thank you (and indeed Sunway Safaris as a whole) for the fantastic Educational trip afforded to me. I was sceptical about joining an overland tour, as all my travels in the past have been self-driving, where I had the freedom to make my own decisions as I went along, and I was concerned about how enjoyable it would be to have my day-by-day planned out in advance for me. Boy was I wrong. It was liberating. I had nothing to concern myself with other than just going along and enjoying what was ahead. Your guides, Annitta and Sfiso were absolutely fantastic! I felt a part of the family, and I think they enjoyed it equally. They were professional, courteous and helpful, while still being relaxed and entertaining. Every step of the way was well led by them, and their knowledge of the in's and out's was staggering. The route itself was well thought out, and although the weather turned against us at one point (heavy rains flooded the baggage compartment) the truck was reliable, practical and comfortable in a utilitarian way. I was incredibly happy to have the whole back row to myself, seeing as there were only 5 of us in the group. I gained such an understanding of the working of overland tours, thanks to Sfiso and Annitta making the effort to answer my many silly questions. I also gained a definite love for the idea of overland touring, and to be perfectly honest, I can't see myself actually suggesting anyone but Sunway to my clients, I think I have spread that sentiment well through the office. I am very impressed, very grateful, and I have never come back from holiday as relaxed and happy as I did coming back from my trip with Sunway. Thanks again Dirk, you have my sincerest thanks.
We went on the Cape Town to Victoria Falls Camping trip. Every destination exceeded my expectations. The scenery and wildlife was fantastic. We saw everything from penguins to black rhinos. Wonderful geology, sand dunes, waterfalls, salt pans and National Parks such as Etosha.
Be prepared to get up early and there are some long journeys. Spend a few days in Cape Town before the trip and go to Hermanus to see they Right whales. The tour was Brilliant!! I am reborn! Simply the best holiday I have ever been on!!
I was recommended this holiday and I'm very glad to have taken it up! Thanks to a convincing Jeff the Botswana Wildside might be my next trip.

We were recently on the tour "Cape Town to Victoria Falls" with Chris Pindani and Lazarus Mwale.
We really enjoyed our trip with two fantastic guides. A good cook (Lazzzz) and a good driver (Chris).
Both could tell us so much about the country and the animals. We really enjoyed this trip.
Thanks a lot to the guys for the fantastic time we spent together in an amazing area. See you on a next trip.Eric & Peggy De Roy - Abbeloos, Belgium
Hello Sunway, Albert and Ruan;
I have been back home in Canada for a week and it is -10 celcius, but I am toasty warm in my mind with the memories of the tour. The Cape to Vic falls trip has been the absolute definitive highlight of a culminated 4 sojourns to the African continent over the past several years. It stands out for the amazing agenda that was so well balanced with free time, something I had yet to experience with other tour companies, which allowed me time to digest and reflect upon each days sensory perceptions. Every day was a new adventure that began with a wonderful group of fellow travellers, and two incredible guides that saw to our every want and need, ensuring that "the pleasure was all ours."
My gratitude goes to Albert, and Ruan, who saw that we were always well fed (a challenge since there were 2 of us with special dietary considerations and meant they needed to prepare 3 separate menus every time we ate), safe, happy and seeing/learning the things that we most desired to experience on our travel across the countries.
Albert is generous of heart and spirit with the ability to make us all individually feel we were the most important people in the world. His easy going, patient, and absolutely fun nature created the base for harmony that existed amongst us as a group, and extended well beyond to the communities and peoples we visited in his beautiful Africa. Albert's knowledge of the nature of flora, fauna, geology, and the human condition, brought insight to the complexities of the people and place we visited. Thank you, Albert.
Ruan, his first trip guiding with Sunway, was enthusiastic to show us his Africa (though newly explored territories for him) and he made it damn fun, too. His cooking skills, his stories, especially his love and knowledge for all things creepy crawly satisfied my quest to discover all things creepy crawly. Digging in the dirt, discovering the snakes, and rock hunting. Thank you, Ruan.
I cannot single out any one thing we did as the absolute ultimate favourite memory. I have not played and laughed so hard, that even now a huge grin breaks out when I think back. Every activity held it's own unique experience. I will add, however, that the visit with the Kalahari bushmen/Khoisan families stands out as a genuine, authentic experience that I had not anticipated - most incredible in this day when cultures have been so exposed that they are usually only for show. Thank you, Sunway.
I can't wait to return to Africa next year (yes, it is in my heart) - and I will definitely choose Sunway to guide me through Africa's diverse culture and landscape.
Cheers, and looking forward,
Ivy Gowen, Canada

We are writing to you because we had the best holiday of our life. Steve and I travel a lot, and have never had the service that we received from Shandle and Evans. We gained weight with Shandle amazing cooking. We have wonderful memories of these boys, sitting around the camp fire laughing, telling stories, and of cause eating.
We have told all our friends back in New Zealand, and we think we have sold you a few trips. Only problem is Steve and I want to come back again. We never got sick of the animals. We also think you should make a TV program with Shandle cooking his way around Africa.
New Zealanders are very big on the outdoor life, and it wasn't until they saw our photos that they realized how amazing your outdoor life is. In fact its better than ours. Your tents leave ours for dead.We also wanted to comment at the fact that Evans has only been with your company for a short while.
We would never have guessed. We would have though he has been with you for 10 years. These two boys worked extremely well together, and we were very lucky, because they made our trip memorable.
Our dream is to come back to Arica soon, with more friends, and maybe head further north of Arica. in the red truck (which we loved) We want Shandl and Evens for our drivers.!! Hope this will be possible with plenty of notice.
Kind Regards Steve Craig and Bev Sandoy (New Zealand)
Dear Sunway Safaris,
the last 3 weeks Erwin Monstrey and myself (Julie Van Rompaey) made a trip with sunway safaris. It was from cape town to victoria falls (18/04/2011 until 11/05/2011).
You will probably notice when you read our feedback papers that we really enjoyed our trip. Still we wanted to send you an email to thank our guides : ALBERT and JERRY.
It is a wonderful trip. But this guys really made it happen. During 3 weeks there was always: happiness, responsibility, good kitchen, a lot of education about fauna and flora, helping hands, solving problems, nature conservation, patience with the clients, good and safe driving with the truc, ... .Albert en Jerry made our trip unforgettable!! We really hope to see them back one day.
My best regards, Julie
p.s. we'll send you the pictures on USB by post package
Dear all,
this is to thank you for the unforgettable holiday and the excellent service and hospitality provided by your company in general, especially the two tour guides . I am Alfred Steiner, together with my wife Annelie Olsson Steiner, I did join the camping safari from Cape town to the Victoria Falls from 24 th March to 11 th April 2011. On some of the campgrounds we had up-graded our accomodation already from home.
The two guides were Fred from Namibia and Francois from South Africa. They supported us personally and the entire group from the first to the last moment of our trip .They were not only very experienced in the knowledge of the countries we were travelling through, the knowledge of the fauna and flora of the various areas, but also showed extraordinary competency in creating a great teamspirit within the group, in guiding and protecting the group, great communication skills and were exremely helpful in every possible situation.
It is due two these two outstanding characters that this vacation will have a special place in our memories forever. Please kindly except our sincere gratitude for the profasional services we received and a special thank you to Fred and Francois.
We are looking forward to travel with Sunway afaris again, with warm regards from Vienna,
Alfred Steiner, Austria
I have just got home from an amazing 3 week trip with Sunway (booked throught The Adventure Company) from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. Although the places we visited were fantastic, there are two really important factors that made the trip what it was, and they are the Sunway Guides - Adriaan and Gavin. I really cannot compliment them enough, their knowledge, patience, tolerance (oh so tolerant!), understanding, humour (Adriaan is hilarious!), ability to put our enjoyment and safety first, professional attitude, positive thinking (Gavin is the most positive person I have ever met!), organisation and fun personalities are an absolute credit to them and Sunway. You should be incredibly proud and they are a credit to you.
I am finding it hard to readjust to normal life at home without Adriaan telling me what time to get up for breakfast and saying "Home sweet home"
It was my second trip with Sunway and it will not be my last
