Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana

Hyena Pan 1 .jpg smallJacque having done a few tours now for Sunway Safaris just returned from a back to back tour series and had the following to write… I have just returned from a very exciting and fun trip in Botswana being the Botswana Wild Parks BTa14. On day number five the group leaves the Okavango Delta and heads to the Moremi Game Reserve bordering the mighty Chobe National Park. The Moremi Game reserve is the first reserve in Africa that was established by local residents. Concerned about the rapid depletion of wildlife in their ancestral lands due to uncontrolled hunting and cattle encroachment the Batawana people of Ngamiland, under the leadership of the deceased Chief Moremi III’s wife, Mrs. Moremi, took the bold initiative to proclaim Moremi a game reserve in 1963. This National Park has received a number of important distinctions the most prestige’s being in 2008 when it was voted the “Best game reserve in Africa” by the prestigious African Travel and Tourism Association at South Africa’s premier tourism fair, Indaba held in Durban every year.

Below is a day to day blog of what I experienced.
Day One: After leaving the tar road we hit the dirt and headed North East to the Buffalo fence. After travelling through the fence we turned left and headed to South Gate. As we got to the gate we stopped to have lunch, as it is in Africa it was not long before we had a troop of monkeys around us trying to get our attention to steel our food. Luckily there was nothing stolen as we told the clients to keep vigilant. Not long after three Elephants walked by to welcome us to Moremi, it was a welcoming we will never forget. They wear not interested in us at all as they just stood there minding their own business. After departing North gate we drove through Khwai Village and travelled along the cutline to our overnight stop at Hyena pan. We arrived at Hyena Pan with a warm welcoming song from the staff. We had a wonderful three course dinner around the table with Elephants drinking and trumpeting in the background.

Day Two: After breakfast we went out for a full day game drive on an open game vehicle in Moremi where we got to see Hippos, Giraffe, Elephant, Red Lechwe, an antelope unique to the area and Lions mating just six meters away from our vehicle with the dominant males brothers lying not far away. What a very special sighting indeed. Went back to camp to be safely welcomed back to the Lodge. After dinner we sat around a nice warm bonfire on a chilly night with Lions roaring and Hyena yelping behind the camp.

Day Three: We went out on a half day game drive into the Khwai concession and saw Hippos, Lions and loads of Giraffe. Back at the Lodge we had a lovely lunch and had the rest of the day Siesta (rest). Sitting in the swimming pool with Lions roaring, birds chirping and an Elephant on its way to drink from the pool you are sitting in, what an experience.

Day Four: Packed our bags, had breakfast and off we were for the last short game drive where we saw our last animal for the day, a breeding herd of Buffalo. All in all it was a fantastic 3 days spent in the Moremi Game reserve and surrounding concession.

The Lodge
Hyena Pan is found just outside the Moremi Game Reserve in the middle of the bush. The rooms are permanent tents with two beds and en suite toilets and showers. Dinners are three course meals, breakfast and lunch being buffet style with staff always willing to help with your needs. There is a swimming pool with an 180˚ view to a beautiful waterhole where you can watch the animals gather to quench their thirst. A boma area below the main deck is where you sit ground level with the waterhole and can experience a  Full HD with surround sound experience called nature.
