Zandre just comleted his thrid Northern Zambia NZe13 expedition and had an amazing trip. He has the following to share... Our safari started in the warm heart of Africa, Malawi. One of the hotter areas you’ll find yourself in during the month of October. We then journeyed our way to the northern parts of Zambia to explore the North and South Luangwa National parks. This area is only accessible six months of the year and it can be risky if you are caught in the middle of the rainy season so time and planning is essential.
In Malawi it’s not just the sun that makes it a hot place but the people is who makes it a heart wondrous country always friendly and open to help. Our adventure soon started to escalate after we left the bustling capital of Lilongwe. Arriving at our first campsite next to Lake Malawi. We got bogged on the beach and that happened to be our campsite for a night under a beautiful starry sky.
The way to Zambia is also an expedition by itself as road signs or any indication of where you are going does not exist. Just a sense of direction and willpower is all you have to get you where you need to be.
And there it is, the smallest most informal border post you’ll ever come across. Spending about one and a half hours to get all the officials who need to stamp the passports and looking for the right offices to go to we made it into Zambia. Driving on the washed-away roads toward North Luangwa, we were getting our share of the classic African massage. This is it, we make a decision to rather stop and set up camp due to the distance still needed to reach camp in North Luangwa. A flat piece of land in the middle of a maize field as peaceful and serene as the bush can provide.
The South Luangwa National park did not disappoint with a big variety of animals and beautiful sightings. The area is popular for the big concentration of predators and this proved to be right. Amazing. Wild camping on the banks of the Luangwa River, where the animals roam through camp daily and Hippos feed on the lawn around your tent at night. A definite favourite area for a keen birder and a person who loves a beautiful sunsets.
The thing that makes this tour so special is the guests who love nature and do not mind roughing it, also sharing a passion with people who love and care for the environment is an exceptional bonus.
