Grace just returned from our first "Livingstone Trail" ZMa16 and had the below to share.
The Zambia and Malawi tour is an amazing trip which covers 2685km through these 2 countries. Passing through villages of laughing, smiling children, men ploughing fields and transporting goods by ox cart, woman beautifully dressed wearing the traditional clothing of the area.
We passed bustling markets selling vegetables, meat and all manners of goods you can imagine. There where people on foot, on bicycles carrying everything from charcoal to goats. We passed fields of maize, sheds full of drying tobacco and piles of baobab fruit getting packed into sacks to head off to the markets. Then not to forget the wildlife sightings!
From hippos on the lower Zambezi canoe safari to leopard lying in a sausage tree amongst the sausages after eating his impala kill in the South Luangwa national park whilst a small herd of elephants passed by below. On the night drive we had not 1 but 3 separate sightings of chameleons which in its self is a truly special experience.
We passed tea plantations, we passed mountains, the Mulanje Massif living up to its name “chilumba mu mlengalenga” (island in the sky).
But for me the absolute highlight of the tour was Mumbo Island situated in Lake Malawi. It is truly a tropical paradise. We spent the last 2 days soaking up the sun on the white beaches, snorkelling and swimming in the crystal clear warm waters around the island marvelling at the wide variety and colours of the Cichlids’ found in the lake.
We walked across the island exploring its beauty and admiring the vegetation, in particular the large granite rocks split in 2 by a massive rock fig. The last evening of this magical tour was spent as a group enjoying a drink whilst watching g the sun set over the waters of this beautiful Lake, a perfect end to a perfect tour.
