Grace and Gee just returned from a Botswana Wild Parks BTa14 and spent a few days in the Khwai/Moremi and had the following to share. After 2 nights wild camping in the delta we travelled in an open 4x4 vehicle through Moremi Game Reserve on to Tau Camp situated in Khwai Private Reserve. It is quite a drive from Maun to Tau Camp, but oh what a beautiful drive! We saw so many different mammal species but the landscape too is stunning.
It is such a beautiful time of the year to visit the bush, being winter time here in Southern Africa; this means that the sun is shining throughout the day but at night it’s a bit chilly and you have to wrap up well for the first couple of hours game drive in the early morning.
After a 3 course dinner and a good sleep we were up bright and early for a full day game drive through Khwai and into Moremi game reserve. What a truly amazing place.. We saw not one but 2 different leopards! The first one captivated us all as he came within 10 metres of our vehicle and proceeded to drink right there next to us. The second leopard we saw when leaving for Maun the following day, she was lying in the grass right next to the road. She sat up looked at us, yawned lazily and after a few minutes slinked off into the bush.
We saw so many elephants but the best was spending 40 minutes with a herd as they crossed in front of us feeding and drinking as they went , it was that magical time of the day as the sun starts setting bathing everything in gold. Magical moments that will stay with all of us forever.
We sat enthralled listening to a big male lion as he stood a few metres away from us roaring; calling for his brother. An incredible sound that fills and reverberates through your whole body.
We saw another 2 male lions who half an hour or so before had caught a buffalo, their faces and paws bloodied.
We saw a pack of wild dog’s busy hunting and were fortunate enough that they came and rested alongside our vehicle for a few minutes before resuming their hunt.
Moremi and Khwai really are a photographers paradise, but even those who were just using their cell phones got amazing photos!!
