Patrick one of our more experienced Zimbabwe guides has been on the road with various operators for many years and now at Sunway Safaris for 3 years. Being a master of the road he has the following to share. No matter how many trips I've made into the Okavango Delta I am still amazed by its vastness & beauty.
Arriving by mokoro you slowly leave the real world behind you and enter the peace & serenity of the water ways, navigating through open spaces & dense reeds, not quite sure where you will end up, then the camp comes into view. Water on the one side and the unspoilt planes of the delta on the other.
Although many are unsure of camping with no electricity or running water there is something to be said about the simplicity of it all, leaving the unnecessary things behind make it more of an experience which most clients truly love and take home never to be forgotten.
In the early morning there is nothing better than to go out on a bush walk with the knowledgeable local guides. This is a unique experience next to none with no safari trucks & paths just us in the African bush. Excited & apprehensive of what you might see be it a zebra head that has been dragged from its carcass by hyenas or a herd of giraffe & zebra stampeding, hearing the grass rustling before you see them you just never know what is around the next corner.
In the afternoon getting back on the water & being taken for a sunset mokoro ride is definitely a highlight even thought the hippos are not keen on sharing their water space with us. Skilled fast navigating gets us safely to land to get a better view point of the sunset.
Returning back to camp at dusk a fire burning & water boiling for tea & showers is a welcomed sight. We are often so fixated on seeing animals in the wild we forget the beauty & uniqueness of the wilderness around us, termite mounds bigger then a man, Lilly pads big enough to hold a baby & a vast unspoilt sky with stars you can only imagine.
To be involved in these tours is a pleasure & an honour, my only wish is that more people would take up the opportunity for an experience like this.
