We (Rochelle & Jonas) recently returned from a great German accommodated JJa14 South Africa walking tour with 12 wonderful and adventurous clients. The clients came to South Africa with the expectation to do some great hikes, get to know the county and its people and of course see some animals. All their expectations were met and far surpassed, as we had great luck with game and even enjoyed the variety that the weather had to offer.
The first hike to Mac Mac Falls surprised us as we were challenged by the cold weather and expected not to have the best view of the falls or the walk but thankfully the mist cleared as we walked and the weather allowed us to spot our first couple of Shongololos (millipedes) .
The next couple days we had great luck with the weather and even better luck with the sighting in Balule. Within the first couple of hours of game driving we had spotted the whole big five, the ugly five and many more. This meant all the clients really wanted to see a leopard by day two of game driving, so we made our way on the search. Luckily we saw a Leopard right next to the road and followed it for a short while; this was very exciting for the clients. We were also visited by some Hyenas and buffalo at our camp site.
The hikes in Dundee were also extremely exciting as the area is full of so much rich history. We felt like we were really getting close to understanding what the solders of the Zulus and British felt like in such beautiful surroundings with such brutal events taking place.
The weather in Drakensberg was less than inviting but that didn’t stop us from really enjoying our hikes as we did have just enough sun to see the awe inspiring landscape. Some of the clients didn’t want to do the hike to the Amphitheatre due to weather, but did the Mahai hike instead which they enjoyed. Those who hiked up to the Amphitheatre thought it was the perfect way to end off the tour.
The clients came on this tour with certain interests and expectations and they all left with their expectations met and surpassed. They developed new interests and were left with a lasting impression of South Africa and Sunway Safaris.
