In July 2019 Paulo and Maxwell enjoyed a Windhoek to Victoria Falls Elephant Track 15 day classic departure (WVac15). They had amazing sightings while in Etosha, here is what Paulo had to say.
Our classic tour is making us visit the wonderful Etosha National Park. Etosha National Park in Namibia is a success story in term of black rhino conservation. It is the biggest black rhino sanctuary in the whole of Africa with over 400 individuals. This protected area is home of the South Western subspecies of black rhino (Diceros bicornis ssp. bicornis).
Black rhino are mainly active at night, late afternoon and in the fresh morning hours. During day time they are quite rare to spot as they are browsers and feed or rest in dense bushes. As we arrive in the park after checking into our rooms we went for an afternoon game drive. Namibia is experiencing an exceptional hard drought this year due to lack of rainfall during the summer. The vegetation is extremely dry but in winter time the temperatures are generally cool. We got lucky to spot 6 rhinoceros in 5 different sightings, which is very exceptional. Most of them were found in the open. Most of the individuals were a little far but some others were very close to our vehicle which allowed the guests to take awesome pictures.
While doing this classic tour you have the great privilege of spending the night inside in the park, in Okaukuejo Camp specifically. There is a big waterhole in front of the camp where rhinos coming to drink from at night. After dinner we paid a visit to the waterhole and were thrilled to see number of rhino drinking. As we watch the rhino drinking, more rhinos were coming down to drink. At a point they were up to 9 around the waterhole. I was also very interested to see the way they interacted with other individuals and other species such as elephant and giraffes. This tour was just amazing for rhino sightings.
