A little history on the Cape Malay community and a seriously yummy Cape Malay Chicken Curry Recipe

The Cape was colonised by the Dutch East India Company in the mid-17th century. Requiring labour, they imported people from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) as slaves.

Despite the diverse origins of the community, this group later became known as the Cape Malays. They now live mainly in the Bo-Kaap in Cape Town.

Looking back at the last 8 years of working at Sunway Safaris i (Dirk) often had agents and clients asking me why it is better to travel in a small group rather than on a self drive safari in Southern Africa. There are a myriad of reasons why traveling in small groups may be ideal for you AND for the environment. When booking a self drive safari there are benefits being that you have time on your side and you can travel at your own speed and stop when you want. There is however the disadvantage of creating a larger carbon footprint & cutting out the services of local guides which robs the guides and his family of an income.

One often gets asked how to market to agents across the globe about your product and what you have to offer clients travelling to Africa. Indaba in Durban South Africa is one of these platforms used to meet directly with travel agents. Being the largest tourism trade show on the African continent many agents from across the globe attend to meet up with local operators. This year was no different with many new agents from different parts of the world heading to Durban.
Another platform used is agent FAM (familiarization) trips where they can join local operators on a short tour to experience life on the road with the local operators. This year we did a post Indaba FAM trip from Durban to Johannesburg with 4 agents from Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
