Whilst on tour with Sunway Safaris at some point of the tour all clients will experience a potjie. Potjiekos (literally meaning pot food) has been part of South Africa’s culture for many centuries since the early days when the first settlers arrived in the Cape. The food was cooked in a black cast-iron potjie pot hanging from a chain over the kitchen fire. Later the black pot accompanied the pioneers who moved into the country. Today, cooking up a potjie has evolved into a unique South African social happening, a tradition almost as popular as the legendary braai. Family and friends are invited and they all settle around the fire with the softly bubbling potjie, chatting, enjoying a drink and having a great time. The packing of the food in layers is the other important part. The onions & meat usually comes first. Add a dash of cooking oil or some fat in the pot, add the meat and brown thoroughly. This is essential to seal in the flavour and improve the appearance of the meat.
I (Tamlyn) have worked for Sunway for over 11 years, and the travelling I have been able to do over the years with the company (even though I am mostly office-bound) is great. My latest trip I was lucky enough to take my husband Keith with, and off we went to Malawi and Zambia for a week. This was a recce trip for our new tour for 2018 – the ZMa16 Zambia & Malawi Livingstone Trail.
This is an accommodated trip (with 5 nights camping) and we set out to visit the main highlights of the tour, starting in South Luangwa and ending on Lake Malawi.
Arthur had a really exciting trip in Botswana recently on our Botswana Wild Parks BTa14 and had the below to share. We had 4 clients on this tour all of them being first time travellers to Africa and very keen adventurers who always appreciated what Mother Nature provided them at any given moment. The tour starts in Johannesburg and heads to Khama Rhino Sanctuary, we spend a night in this reserve set aside for White and Black Rhino. Khama is a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros, restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state and provide economic benefits to the local Botswana community through tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources. Covering approximately, 8585 hectares of Kalahari Sandveld, the sanctuary provides prime habitat for white and black rhino as well as over 30 other animal species and more than 230 species of birds.
Tawanda one of our Zimbabwean guides got back from Botswana after having completed a BTa14 and his clients had such a great game experience that he thought he could share this... The BTa14 Wild Parks is one tour that never fails to provide a great game experience in vast numbers. Each day there is another chance to go out in search for different kind’s flora and fauna. As for the wild life, if you do not get to see any, it does not mean there in none. We need to always remember that these animals are wild and very good at camouflaging, which makes sightings very exciting.
