From safari experiences in Kruger National Park to coastal and mountain landscapes, it offers some of the most varied travel experiences in Africa.

Often called the “Rainbow Nation”, South Africa has eleven official languages and a wide mix of cultures shaped by its complex history and modern transformation.

Wildlife highlights include world class safari parks such as Kruger National Park, Addo Elephant National Park and Mkhuze Game Reserve, offering excellent opportunities to see the Big Five and more.

Zulu and Xhosa cultures are among the most well known in the country, each with deep historical roots that continue to shape South Africa today.

Cape Town

Cape Town is South Africa’s coastal capital city, set between the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Table Mountain range. It is one of the country’s main tourism hubs and a common starting or ending point for South African safari itineraries.

Table Mountain is the city’s defining landmark, offering hiking trails, cable car access and panoramic views over the city and coastline.

The city centre is focused around the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a working harbour area with restaurants, markets and cultural attractions. Cape Town also serves as a gateway to nearby beaches and surrounding scenic regions.

The Cape Winelands is one of South Africa’s premier wine and scenic regions, located just inland from Cape Town. It is known for its mountain landscapes, historic towns and world class wine estates.

Key towns include Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, both famous for wine tasting, fine dining and Cape Dutch architecture.

The region combines working wine farms with art galleries, museums and small village centres, making it one of the most popular day trips from Cape Town.

The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most scenic travel regions, stretching along the southern Cape coast between forests, mountains and the Indian Ocean. The route is known for its beaches, indigenous forests, lagoons and diverse plant life.

Highlights of the region include Tsitsikamma National Park and Storms River, where dramatic coastal scenery and forest walks are a major attraction.

Kruger National Park is South Africa’s premier safari destination and one of the most renowned wildlife reserves in Africa. The park is famous for its excellent Big Five game viewing, including elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino.

Kruger supports an exceptional diversity of wildlife and birdlife, with more mammal species than any other African reserve and over 460 recorded bird species. Its combination of abundant animals, varied habitats and extensive protected wilderness makes it one of the finest safari experiences in Southern Africa.

The Panorama Route is one of South Africa’s most scenic driving routes, linking the Kruger region with the escarpment landscapes of Mpumalanga. The route is famous for its dramatic mountain scenery, waterfalls, forests and panoramic viewpoints.

Major highlights include Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest green canyons in the world, as well as popular viewpoints such as God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

The region forms a natural extension to a Kruger safari, combining wildlife experiences with some of South Africa’s most spectacular inland scenery.

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is one of Africa’s oldest protected wildlife reserves and is renowned for its conservation history and excellent Big Five game viewing.

The park is characterised by rolling hills, river valleys and diverse habitats supporting rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard, along with abundant birdlife.

Located in northern KwaZulu Natal, the reserve combines well with visits to nearby coastal regions and Zulu cultural areas, making it a popular addition to South African safari itineraries.

The Drakensberg is South Africa’s highest mountain range and one of the country’s most dramatic natural landscapes. It forms part of the eastern escarpment and is known for its towering basalt peaks, deep valleys and wide open mountain scenery.

uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering excellent hiking, birding and scenic drives, with routes ranging from short walks to multi day mountain trails.

The region is also rich in San rock art sites, reflecting thousands of years of human history in the mountains, and is a popular extension for travellers combining safari and scenery in South Africa.

The Wild Coast is a remote and undeveloped stretch of South Africa’s eastern coastline, located in the Eastern Cape between rolling hills, rural landscapes and the Indian Ocean. It is known for its isolation, natural beauty and traditional rural character.

Key access points include Coffee Bay and Port St Johns, which are small coastal towns used as bases for exploring the region.

The area is best known for coastal walks, rugged beaches and cultural encounters in Xhosa rural communities, making it a contrasting experience to South Africa’s safari and city destinations.
