Transport
We use custom-built Sunway Safari trucks with 12 forward facing seats. The vehicles are comfortable for cruising and excellent for game viewing with large sliding windows and front hatches for ease of viewing. On 5% of tours we may use Mercedes Sprinter minibuses with 12 seats and air conditioning (with trailer for equipment and baggage). There are several long days of travel providing for a beautiful journey on the way to exciting and varied destinations.
Limited participation
An essential part of your safari is some participation. From carrying your own bag to your room and day packs and water bottles on hikes, to packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure. Where the tour leaders provide meals we ask that clients help (on rotation) with the washing up. When everyone puts in a little effort the trip will run smoothly and efficiently ensuring it is enjoyable for all involved.
Responsible Tourism
Our stay at Zululand Lodge not only supports the wildlife but also the local community outside the reserve in KwaZulu Natal by employing local guides. This provides a truly authentic experience but also fosters a better relationship between the park, it’s visitors and the surrounding communities. Our stay creates employment and income for the villages increasing the importance of tourism and conservation.
Community awareness and prosperity helps to reduce subsistence poaching.
Age Policy
We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children).
If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc).
The best time to visit South Africa
South Africa has a lovely temperate climate filled with plenty of sunny, dry days. The main factors influencing conditions are altitude and the surrounding oceans. The Indian Ocean is on the eastern coast, and has a warm current, causing the eastern side to be more tropical than the west. South Africa experiences winter in June, July and August and summer months are October through to April.
Cape Town and the western Cape has a Mediterranean climate, meaning winter rain and long dry summer. The rest of the country has summer rains, frequently in short thunder storms that roll across the country from the southern ocean fronts.
This tour, the Walking South Africa, visits the northern parts of South Africa only.
Dry season is from May to October: Water becomes scarce and wildlife gathers around predictable water resources.
May:- Autumn temperatures are typically 10°C to 26°C
June, July & August:- Winter morning game drives can be cold at around 6°C/42°F, but it climbs to 23-25°C/73-77°F. The Drakensberg Mountains can have snow caps, and the days are crisp with clear blue skies and ideal for walking.
September & October:- Spring begins and mornings are from 12°C/53°F warming up to 28°C/82°F. It can be somewhat warmer on the east coast and low veld (Kruger), with temperatures up to 30°C/86°F and moderate humidity.
Green season is from November to April in northern South Africa and the rain falls typically in short thunder storms that pass within hours. Migratory birds arrive, many of the antelope have lambs and land feels vibrant and alive. The air is clear and brilliant light makes for awesome photography. Early morning walking at this time of year can be very rewarding.
November & December:- Typically temperatures range between 15°C/59°F and 28°C/82°F. Most of the migratory birds arrive, the bird song is incredible each morning. The rains bring better grazing, the game condition improves and many young are born.
January & February:- The Summer or “Green” months, have occasional storms in the afternoon. Temperatures can reach 29°C/84°F and the humidity is higher in the tropical coastal areas and also on the lowveld areas of Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu Natal.
March & April:- Lovely, clear weather and few clouds prevail, but the nights are cooler at around 15°C/59°F. Day temperatures range from 28°C/82°F down and humidity drops.
