Information
Overnight
13 nights on safari we stay at small, intimate and often private lodges (including tented camps), with en suite facilities.
Meals
13 breakfasts, 14 lunches and 10 dinners are included. Of which 9 breakfasts & 8 dinners are provided by the lodges. The remaining included meals are provided by the Sunway crew, prepared at the vehicle and eaten around the boma or campfire.
Transport
We use custom-built Sunway Safari trucks with 12 forward facing seats. These vehicles are comfortable for cruising with large sliding windows and front hatches giving everyone a good view; or (on 10% of tours) Mercedes Sprinter minibuses with 12 seats and air conditioning (with a trailer for equipment and gear).
Limited participation
An essential part of your safari is some participation. From carrying your own bag to your room and day packs and water bottles on hikes, to packing the truck in the morning – it’s all part of your adventure. Where the tour leaders provide meals, we ask that clients help (on rotation) with the washing up. When everyone puts in a little effort the trip will run smoothly and efficiently ensuring it is enjoyable for all involved
Walking Grade
Leisurely – 1 – 3hrs.
Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths. A pleasant morning or afternoon walk. Relatively flat without much change in altitude (<200m).
Moderate – 3 – 5hrs.
Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include some steep unsurfaced paths, open country and may be at a brisk pace. Moderate altitude change (200-400m).
Challenging - 4 – 6hrs.
Walks for people with a good level of fitness. May include steep unsurfaced paths, open country, and may be at a brisk pace. People in doubt about their fitness should contact the organiser or tour leader in advance to assess difficulty. Significant altitude change (>400m) and/or walking above altitudes above 2,500m above sea level.
There are 8 amazing walks on this tour and they range from easy to challenging. We walk on mountain paths so light hiking boots are sufficient (ankle protection is required). All walks are weather dependent especially in the Drakensberg. Please see Itinerary for details.
Responsible Tourism
Several times a year Sunway Safaris operates a trip for underprivileged children from PEN Organisation to visit Pilanesberg Game reserve, introducing the children to the wildlife, the importance of conservation and helping broaden their horizons. PEN Organisation supports disadvantaged children and families to try and empower them through learning, training, and job placement using resources they would not normally have access to. We believe environmental education is important opportunity, and allows them to see for themselves wildlife, nature conservation at work, and also shows them the many unique employment opportunities that are available in the conservation or tourism industry.
Age Policy
We accept children 12-18 with accompanying adults on scheduled tours (for private groups we can accept younger children).
If the clients are older than 65 years, then we require a medical certificate too (stating client is fit and healthy to embark on a multi-day tour covering long distances etc).
The best time to visit South Africa
South Africa has a lovely temperate climate filled with plenty of sunny, dry days. The main factors influencing conditions are altitude and the surrounding oceans. The Indian Ocean is on the eastern coast, and has a warm current, causing the eastern side to be more tropical than the west. South Africa experiences winter in June, July and August and summer months are October through to April.
Cape Town and the western Cape has a Mediterranean climate, meaning winter rain and long dry summer. The rest of the country has summer rains, frequently in short thunder storms that roll across the country from the southern ocean fronts.
This tour, the Walking South Africa, visits the northern parts of South Africa only.
Dry season is from May to October: Water becomes scarce and wildlife gathers around predictable water resources.
May:- Autumn temperatures are typically 10°C to 26°C
June, July & August:- Winter morning game drives can be cold at around 6°C/42°F, but it climbs to 23-25°C/73-77°F. The Drakensberg Mountains can have snow caps, and the days are crisp with clear blue skies and ideal for walking.
September & October:- Spring begins and mornings are from 12°C/53°F warming up to 28°C/82°F. It can be somewhat warmer on the east coast and low veld (Kruger), with temperatures up to 30°C/86°F and moderate humidity.
Green season is from November to April in northern South Africa and the rain falls typically in short thunder storms that pass within hours. Migratory birds arrive, many of the antelope have lambs and land feels vibrant and alive. The air is clear and brilliant light makes for awesome photography. Early morning walking at this time of year can be very rewarding.
November & December:- Typically temperatures range between 15°C/59°F and 28°C/82°F. Most of the migratory birds arrive, the bird song is incredible each morning. The rains bring better grazing, the game condition improves and many young are born.
January & February:- The Summer or “Green” months, have occasional storms in the afternoon. Temperatures can reach 29°C/84°F and the humidity is higher in the tropical coastal areas and also on the lowveld areas of Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu Natal.
March & April:- Lovely, clear weather and few clouds prevail, but the nights are cooler at around 15°C/59°F. Day temperatures range from 28°C/82°F down and humidity drops.
