Khama Rhino is a community based wildlife project established in 1989 as a last attempt effort to save the almost extinct rhino of the area. The sanctuary covers 8585 hectares of Kalahari Sandveld and is situated 20km from the Serowe village. Lutenant General Sertse Khama and other conservationist led the project. In 1992 four white rhino were introduced to Khama Rhino from Chobe National Park, Botswana and 10 years later the critically endangered black rhino was introduced. The Botswana Defence Force (BDF) keeps a watchful eye on their precious rhinos and are constantly patrolling the sanctuary’s borders.

Rhino are not the only animals to be marvelled at- the sanctuary is home to small and big animals with over 30 animal species; including Zebra, Wildebeest, Springbok, Small Spotted Genet and bat-eared fox and well over 230 species of birds. They all find protection at the sanctuary and offer its tourists incredible and unforgettable game viewing opportunities.

Khama rhino is managed by the local community and offers game drives, birding, bush walks and an environmental education centre. These activities provide economic benefit to the local people through the creation of tourism and the sustainable use of resources.

The hard work and dedication has paid off and the journey of the rhino of Khama has a happy tone- to date Khama has 35 white rhino and plans to reintroduce these rhino to Moremi Game Reserve and the Makgadikgadi Reserve are underway. The reserves first baby black rhino was born in 2008.
